Portfolio task 1: Diversification: The Most Important Factor for Engineering.

After reading the two articles, I feel that for engineers the most important thing is to be able to diversify into other sectors in order to drive advancement and overcome new challenges. Engineers have done a lot for humanity since the past. However, societal and environmental problems that the world is currently facing have changed with the times. Engineers can only do so much without support and funding.

In order to break new barriers and solve problems, engineers cannot remain as mere designers or builders. They must expand their skills and specialties into other sectors. Sectors such as education, for example, to create awareness of environmental problems among the new generation, and to train more engineers. Or into the service sector, where they can serve the community in various ways such as developing security systems. Getting into politics is also a way to create awareness among the public and to get the support and funding required to solve environmental problems.

In the past, innovation has always been the driving force behind engineering, and it will still be the same in the future. Without it there would not have been as much improvement and advancement. Diversification will lead to developing new approaches and solutions. After all, depending only on the same old methods will definitely not solve new problems that arise, nor will it lead to many new inventions.

Adapting to changes to overcome challenges had always been the best ability that engineers possess. And diversification is one way of adapting. The world is constantly changing at a fast pace and engineers must not only must keep up with it, they must also be able to foresee problems that will occur in the future. This can be helped by broadening their views through working in different areas. Therefore, diversification is the factor that will help engineers to meet the challenges mentioned in the two articles.
